Methods: Modular, Reusable Code Blocks

PreviousNext Lesson
In Plain English

A method is a named block of code that performs a specific task. You define it with inputs (parameters) and an output (return type). Methods keep code modular, reusable (DRY), and easy to debug.

The Mental Model

"A method is like an espresso machine in a coffee shop. You give it coffee beans and water (parameters), press the start button (execute logic), and it hands you a shot of espresso (return value)."

Deep Dive: How It Works

Method Signature: static <return_type> <MethodName>(<parameters>) { ... }

Return Statement: return result; sends the calculated output back to the caller.

void Return Type: Used when a method performs an action (like logging or saving to a database) without returning a value.

Method Overloading: You can define multiple methods with the EXACT same name as long as their parameter lists differ in type or count.

Syntax Blueprint

static int Add(int a, int b) {
  return a + b;
}

static void Greet(string name) {
  Console.WriteLine($"Hello, {name}!");
}

Define return type, method name, input parameters, and return statement.

PointCore Rules to Remember

Point star
DRY Principle: Don't Repeat Yourself—package repeated logic into callable methods.
Point star
PascalCase Naming: In C#, method names start with a capital letter (CalculateTax, GetUser).
Point star
Method Overloading: Allows multiple versions of a method to handle different input types.

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them

Mistake:Forgetting to return a value from a non-void method

Why it happens: Forgetting the return keyword.

How to fix: All non-void methods must return a value matching their declared return type.

Pro Tip: In modern C#, you can use expression-bodied methods for one-liners: static int Square(int x) => x * x;!

How it works: CalculateTotal returns integer sums that are passed directly to PrintReceipt.

Your Turn: Micro Challenge

No pressure! Edit the starter code below and test your solution with instant feedback.

Micro Exercise

Write a square method

  • PointWrite a method static int Square(int x) that returns x * x.
  • PointIn Main(), print "Square of 7 is 49" by calling Square(7).
