While Loops

PreviousNext Lesson
In Plain English

The `while` loop checks a condition before each iteration. If the condition is `true`, the loop body executes. This cycle repeats continuously until the condition becomes `false`. It is ideal when you do not know in advance how many iterations will be needed.

The Mental Model

"A while loop is like a security gate: "While the driver does not have a clearance badge, keep the gate closed and ask again.""

Deep Dive: How It Works

Pre-test loop: If the condition is false on the very first check, the body will execute zero times.

Loop control variable: Typically initialized before the loop, tested in the condition, and updated inside the loop body.

Infinite Loops: If you forget to update the loop variable, the condition stays true forever, hanging your program.

Syntax Blueprint

int i = 0;
while (i < 5) {
    System.out.println(i);
    i++; // Crucial update step!
}

Always update the control variable inside the loop body to avoid infinite loops.

PointCore Rules to Remember

Point star
Pre-Test Condition: Checks condition before entering the loop body.
Point star
Zero or More Iterations: May execute 0 times if initial condition is false.
Point star
Preventing Infinite Loops: Ensure the condition eventually becomes false.

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them

Mistake:Forgetting the increment step (e.g. i++) inside the loop

Why it happens: Without updating i, i < 5 remains true indefinitely, creating an infinite loop.

How to fix: Double-check that the loop variable changes with every iteration.

Pro Tip: In ZenCompiler, if a program runs for too long, the sandbox container automatically halts and reports a timeout.

How it works: Loop runs 3 times as count decreases from 3 down to 0, then outputs Ignition!.

Your Turn: Micro Challenge

No pressure! Edit the starter code below and test your solution with instant feedback.

Micro Exercise

Print numbers 1 through 4

  • PointUse a while loop to print numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 on separate lines.
  • PointStart with int i = 1; loop while i <= 4; increment i++ inside.
