JSON & XML REST API Interoperability

PreviousNext Lesson
In Plain English

Modern PHP powers millions of microservices and REST APIs. Master json_encode with JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR, decoding JSON into associative arrays, parsing XML documents using SimpleXMLElement, and setting HTTP Content-Type response headers.

The Mental Model

"JSON and XML are the universal diplomatic translators of the internet. A PHP backend encodes its internal database memory into JSON so a React frontend or mobile iOS app can understand it instantly."

Deep Dive: How It Works

JSON Encoding: json_encode($data, JSON_PRETTY_PRINT | JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR) serializes PHP arrays/objects into JSON text.

JSON Decoding: json_decode($json, associative: true, flags: JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR) parses JSON strings into PHP associative arrays.

XML Parsing: $xml = new SimpleXMLElement($rawXml) provides clean property-based node traversal ($xml->user->name).

HTTP Headers: header("Content-Type: application/json; charset=UTF-8"); sets standard API response format.

Syntax Blueprint

<?php

$json = json_encode(["status" => "ok", "code" => 200]);
$data = json_decode($json, true);
$xml = simplexml_load_string("<root><item>42</item></root>");

Serialize with json_encode, deserialize with json_decode($str, true), and parse XML with simplexml_load_string.

PointCore Rules to Remember

Point star
Strict JSON Errors: Use JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR to throw a JsonException on invalid syntax rather than silently returning false/null.
Point star
Associative Decoding: Always pass true as the 2nd argument to json_decode() to get native associative arrays instead of stdClass objects.
Point star
SimpleXML Navigation: Access child tags like object properties ($xml->book->title) and XML attributes like array keys ($xml->book["id"]).

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them

Mistake:Forgetting true in json_decode($str), resulting in stdClass objects where array bracket syntax $data["key"] fails.

Why it happens: json_decode defaults to returning stdClass objects.

How to fix: Always call json_decode($json, true).

Pro Tip: Implement the JsonSerializable interface in your domain models to customize exactly what fields get exposed during json_encode().

How it works: json_encode generated clean formatted JSON, while SimpleXMLElement unpacked XML attributes.

Your Turn: Micro Challenge

No pressure! Edit the starter code below and test your solution with instant feedback.

Micro Exercise

Parse and Extract JSON Configuration

  • PointDeclare $rawJson = '{"app":"ZenCompiler","port":8080,"debug":true}';.
  • PointDecode the JSON into an associative array using json_decode($rawJson, true).
  • PointPrint "App: [app] running on port [port]".
