Sets & Unique Collections

PreviousNext Lesson
In Plain English

A set is a collection where duplicates are impossible. If you toss 5 copies of "apple" into a set, it only keeps one. Sets are defined with curly braces {} and excel at membership testing and eliminating duplicate records.

The Mental Model

"Imagine a bouncer keeping a guest list of unique VIP names. If someone already on the list tries to sign up a second time, the bouncer smiles and ignores the duplicate entry."

Deep Dive: How It Works

Sets are unordered collections of unique elements. Defined with curly braces: tags = {"python", "ai", "cloud"}.

Deduplication: Passing a list with duplicate entries to set() instantly removes all duplicates: list(set([1, 2, 2, 3])) becomes [1, 2, 3].

Blazing Fast Membership: Checking if "x" in my_set runs in O(1) constant time, making sets vastly faster than lists for large searches.

Mathematical Operations: Union | (all items), Intersection & (common items), Difference - (items in A but not B).

Syntax Blueprint

unique_ids = {101, 102, 103}
unique_ids.add(104)      # Adds 104
unique_ids.add(101)      # Ignored (already exists)

Curly braces {} with standalone values create a set. Duplicate values are discarded.

PointCore Rules to Remember

Point star
Zero Duplicates: Sets automatically enforce uniqueness for every element.
Point star
Unordered: Sets do not maintain index positions. You cannot access set[0].
Point star
Fast Lookups: Checking "item in my_set" is instantaneous even with 100,000 items.

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them

Mistake:Creating an empty set with empty_set = {}

Why it happens: {} creates an empty dictionary by default in Python.

How to fix: Use empty_set = set() to create an empty set.

Pro Tip: Find common items between two lists in one line: common = set(list_a) & set(list_b).

Micro Exercise

Remove duplicate numbers with set

  • PointGiven raw_nums = [1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3], convert it to a set.
  • PointPrint the length of the unique set using len().
