Downloading Files with wget & curl -O

PreviousNext Lesson
In Plain English

Downloading assets, binaries, and datasets from remote servers is handled by `wget` and `curl`. `wget` is built specifically for downloading with automatic retry, recursive site mirroring, and download resumption (`-c`); `curl -O` saves files using their remote name.

The Mental Model

"`curl` is a general-purpose communications satellite; `wget` is a heavy-duty cargo freight train designed to download large files and resume if the train stops halfway."

Deep Dive: How It Works

wget vs curl: `wget` automatically downloads to the remote filename; `curl` dumps to stdout unless `-O` (remote filename) or `-o <dest>` is passed.

Resuming Broken Downloads (-c): `wget -c <URL>` resumes downloading from the exact byte offset where a network drop occurred.

Quiet / Scripting Mode: `wget -q` suppresses progress output for clean log files.

Syntax Blueprint

wget -q https://example.com/archive.tar.gz # Quiet download
wget -c https://example.com/large_dataset.iso # Resume broken download
curl -sSL -O https://example.com/release.zip # curl download to file
curl -sSL https://get.docker.com | bash # Stream pipeline

Use wget -c for resumable downloads and curl -sSL -O for fast single-file downloads.

PointCore Rules to Remember

Point star
Resumable Downloads: wget -c uses HTTP Range headers to prevent restarting multi-gigabyte downloads.
Point star
Custom Destination Names: `wget -O custom_name.zip <URL>` overrides the default filename.
Point star
Recursive Mirroring: `wget -m -np <URL>` mirrors entire documentation directories offline.

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them

Mistake:Running `curl <URL>` without `-O` or `>` on a binary file and flooding the terminal with binary gibberish.

Why it happens: curl writes to stdout by default.

How to fix: Always provide `-O` or `-o destination_file`.

Pro Tip: Use `wget --spider <URL>` to test whether a download link is valid and reachable without actually downloading bytes.
