Remote SSH Connections: ssh, Keys & Config

PreviousNext Lesson
In Plain English

The `ssh` (Secure Shell) protocol encrypts remote terminal sessions and command execution over untrusted networks. Modern security standards mandate Ed25519 public-key cryptography over passwords, managed effortlessly via `~/.ssh/config`.

The Mental Model

"SSH is like an armored cryptographic tunnel: anything sent through (keystrokes, commands, data) is invisible to eavesdroppers on the outside network."

Deep Dive: How It Works

Ed25519 Key Generation: `ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "[email protected]"` generates high-speed, elliptic-curve public/private key pairs.

Public vs Private: Private key (`id_ed25519`, mode 600) NEVER leaves your machine; Public key (`id_ed25519.pub`) is placed in the remote server's `~/.ssh/authorized_keys`.

Remote One-Shot Execution: `ssh user@host "df -h /; uptime"` runs commands remotely and streams stdout back to your local terminal.

Syntax Blueprint

ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "user@zen"
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub [email protected]
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 [email protected]
ssh [email protected] "uptime"

Generate keys with ssh-keygen, install public keys with ssh-copy-id, and connect securely.

PointCore Rules to Remember

Point star
Ed25519 Standard: Far more secure and compact than legacy 2048-bit RSA keys.
Point star
Strict File Permissions: ~/.ssh must be mode 700; private keys must be mode 600 or SSH client refuses to run.
Point star
~/.ssh/config Profiles: Alias complex hostnames, ports, and identity keys into simple commands like `ssh prod`.

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them

Mistake:Having loose file permissions on `~/.ssh/id_rsa` (e.g. mode 644 or 777).

Why it happens: SSH client refuses to load private keys that are readable by other local users.

How to fix: Run `chmod 700 ~/.ssh && chmod 600 ~/.ssh/id_*`.

Pro Tip: Use `ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o ConnectTimeout=5` in automated CI/CD deployment scripts.

How it works: ssh-keygen created both the private key (id_test) and public signature (id_test.pub).
