Mixins: Multi-Source Composition with with & on

PreviousNext Lesson
In Plain English

A **Mixin** (`mixin Name`) is a way to reuse a class's code in multiple class hierarchies without traditional multiple inheritance. Classes include mixins using the `with` keyword (`class Bird extends Animal with Flying, Singing`). The `on` keyword (`mixin Flying on Animal`) restricts which superclasses can apply the mixin, granting access to superclass methods.

The Mental Model

"Mixins are like skill badges or power-ups in a video game: whether a character is a Warrior or a Mage, applying the "Flying" power-up gives them flight capabilities without altering their core character class."

Deep Dive: How It Works

`mixin` Keyword: Declares a composable slice of functionality with methods and fields.

`with` Clause: Placed after `extends` to mix in one or more mixins (`with Logger, Serializable`).

`on` Superclass Constraint: `mixin Loggable on State` ensures the mixin can only be applied to `State` subclasses and can access `State` properties.

Syntax Blueprint

mixin Logger {
  void log(String msg) => print("[LOG] $msg");
}

class AuthService with Logger {
  void login() => log("User authenticated");
}

Mixin declaration and inclusion via the with clause.

PointCore Rules to Remember

Point star
Multi-Source Code Reuse: Share behavior across completely unrelated class trees.
Point star
Linearization Order: Mixins are evaluated in order from left to right in the `with` clause.
Point star
Flutter Standard: Heavily used in Flutter (e.g. `with SingleTickerProviderStateMixin`).

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them

Mistake:Declaring a generative constructor inside a `mixin`.

Why it happens: Mixins cannot be instantiated directly; therefore, they cannot have generative constructors.

How to fix: Initialize mixin state via methods or factory helpers instead of constructors.

Pro Tip: Use `mixin class` if you want a type to be usable as both a regular instantiable class and a mixin.

How it works: Duck composed independent flight and swimming capabilities via mixin inclusion.

Your Turn: Micro Challenge

No pressure! Edit the starter code below and test your solution with instant feedback.

Micro Exercise

Create and Apply Timestamped Mixin

  • PointCreate `mixin Timestamped { void printTime() => print("Event: 2026-09-20"); }`.
  • PointCreate `class LogEntry with Timestamped {}`.
  • PointIn `main()`, instantiate `LogEntry().printTime();`.
