Python Processing Columns & Structured Data with awk
`awk` is a Turing-complete, pattern-scanning and data processing language designed by Aho, Weinberger, and Kernighan. It excels at slicing tabular datasets, calculating column totals, filtering based on numerical thresholds, and generating formatted reports.
"`awk` is like having a lightweight programmable spreadsheet formula processor directly inside your command line pipeline."
Deep Dive: How It Works
Field Variables: `$0` represents the entire line, `$1` the first column, `$2` the second, and `$NF` the last column.
Field Separator (-F): By default, awk splits on whitespace. Use `-F","` or `-F":"` for CSV or /etc/passwd files.
BEGIN and END Blocks: `BEGIN { ... }` runs before processing any lines; `END { ... }` runs after all lines are processed.
Syntax Blueprint
awk '{print $1, $3}' file.txt
awk -F":" '{print $1, $6}' /etc/passwd
awk '$3 > 50 {print $1, $3}' data.txt
awk '{sum += $2} END {print "Total:", sum}' sales.txtUse awk pattern-action blocks to filter, transform, and aggregate columnar data.
Core Rules to Remember

Common Beginner Traps & How to Fix Them
Using double quotes around awk programs (`awk "{print $1}"`) in bash scripts. Why it happens: Bash attempts to expand `$1` as a shell positional parameter before awk receives it.
How to fix: Always wrap awk programs in single quotes: `awk '{print $1}'`.

Extract Second Column with awk
Create `/tmp/awk_data.txt` with entries "apple 100", "banana 200", "cherry 300".
Use `awk '{print $2}'` to print only the numbers.
Delete `/tmp/awk_data.txt`.
