Lesson 37 of 55
9 mins readPython Regular Expression Basics & Binding (=~)
In Plain English
Perl is the gold standard of regular expression engines (PCRE). Test patterns against strings using the match operator `m/pattern/` (or `/pattern/`) and the binding operator `=~`.
Deep Dive: How It Works
Binding Operator (=~): Binds a target string to a regular expression test (`$str =~ /pattern/`).
Negated Binding (!~): Returns true if the string does NOT match the pattern (`$str !~ /error/`).
Default Topic Matching: `/pattern/` without `=~` implicitly tests the `$_` variable.
Core Rules to Remember

The =~ Binding Operator: Connects any scalar string to a regular expression.

First-Class Engine: Perl regex is compiled into optimized bytecode directly by the interpreter.

How it works: $log_entry matched /ERROR/ with =~ and did not contain /SUCCESS/ with !~.
